Through her art practice, she explores our relationship to place and how it shapes and is shaped by society. She primarily creates drawings, but she also makes videos, animations, installations, and miniatures.Theriault graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art from Mount Allison University (Sackville, NB). She has most notably presented artworks at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery (Charlottetown, PE), Galerie Sans Nom (Moncton, NB), Galerie d’art Louise-et-Reuben-Cohen (Moncton, NB), and Artch (Montréal, QC). Her work has been supported by PEI Artist Grants, Quebec Arts Council, and the Canada Council for the Arts. Her recent presentations include a solo exhibition at the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adapation and as part of a thematic residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. She is currently the executive director of the artist-run centre This Town Is Small in Charlottetown, PEI. Artist Statement Lisa Theriault primarily works in drawing, meticulously creating detailed landscapes that are imaginative, playful, and architectural. The landscapes she creates are often devoid of humans. They act as theoretical playgrounds for her reflections on place. Although highly structured and at times desolate, her work persists as friendly, approachable, and optimistic representations. Theriault’s art practice is slow and methodical. She studies her surrounding environments through personal exploration and by examining theories of placemaking, including historical research. She uses her research to form prompts, the guiding questions behind the works she creates, that are then bolstered by her imagination. In her drawings, she is especially interested in using technical drawing methods and parallel projection to prioritize the subject and remove a singular gaze. Instead, the viewer hovers above, detached from impossible spaces. At times, her work may change form into video, animation, installation, or miniatures - reimagining and layering her references and drawings into moving images or into physical space. Relationships to place are intensely personal and political, often serving as an indication of the values and ideologies of those that inhabit them. In looking closer at the construction of landscapes, on a conscious and unconscious level, she looks to gain an understanding of the cultural and societal influences that are inherent within placemaking. Theriault se tourne parfois aux vidéos, aux animations, aux installations ou aux miniatures, réinventant et superposant ses références et dessins pour créer des images en mouvement ou des espaces physiques.Les relations avec les endroits sont profondément intimes et politisées, traduisant souvent les valeurs et les idéologies qui les habitent. Installed directly on the gallery walls, these drawings create a layered environment that moves between documentation and fiction, becoming part of an ongoing exchange between the work and the artist-run spaces in which it is exhibited. The exhibition's title is borrowed from "Rhetoric on the Run," a 1983 text by artist and writer Clive Robertson published in Parallelogramme, a now defunct Canadian artist-run centre magazine. The excerpt reads, “Artists. Artists are very serious people. They have something called work which looks like fun, reads like fun, sounds like fun, but is anything but fun.”&nbsp; Written at a different moment in the history of Canadian artist-run culture, the text reflects concerns that remain familiar today, even as the conditions surrounding artists and arts workers have changed significantly over the past four decades. TrickleSolo exhibition and residency at the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation at University of Prince Edward Island, January 8 - March 4 2024Calamity: A Torrent and a Trickle was an exhibition that explore imagined spaces amidst an ever-deteriorating environment. The drawings not only document but also fictionalize climate disasters,&nbsp;delving into the psyche's response to pressing environmental challenges, juxtaposing fragility with resiliency and&nbsp; reality with escapism.The wall installation The Observation Lab was composed of drawing cut-outs that developed over two months to depict a research laboratory. This work-in-progress responded to the research, conversations, and experiences I encountered during my time as a Climate Artist-in-Residence. Within the artwork, viewers may notice references to various objects, furnishings, and findings from the Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation, along with natural elements observed through the building's windows. The building itself serves as a canvas. These artists work across disciplines, using drawing, video, sculpture, and installation to interpret both their past experiences and their speculations about the future. Worth’s sculptural vignettes examine rural infrastructure through playful use of space and dialogues between mundane objects. Theriault's meticulous and detailed drawings build a narrative around a lone high-rise building as it is overtaken by a collapsing environment. Furness’s paintings and videos reflect on farm spaces in relation to tropes found in their depictions in horror sci fi and dystopian fiction. In addition to the works created independently, the meetings held in preparation for this exhibition lead to the creation of a collaborative installation stemming from their collective experience of Hurricane Fiona. Charming details are strewn about: an assortment of snacks, a stack of books, and a menagerie of chairs around an outdoor dining table. Together, they reflect on balances in life between pleasure and productivity as well as community and solitude, while offering glimpses of sustainability, simple living, and proximity to nature. &nbsp; As I grew up on P.E.I. and had summer jobs at several of the locations shown in the video, I would often return to these places throughout the year with an interest in seeing how they had changed. The footage has a calm stillness and slow pace as it cycles through views of tourist destinations and attractions from across the island in the off-season, including closed down shops, restaurants, booths, amusement parks, campgrounds, beaches, and entertainment venues. Subtle movements are visible within the once bustling locations, with signs of fall and winter creeping into the frame, while cheerful signage and advertisements seem misplaced with few people around to witness them. Contrasted with the imagery is audio that was recorded at the same sites at the height of tourist season, layered together to create vibrant soundscapes. The resulting video reveals the transitory nature of place, bringing together the varied seasons of an island that is seldom represented as anything other than an idealistic summer destination. Off-Season was presented at Art in the Open Festival (Charlottetown, PE) on August 24, 2019 and in the exhibition Lisa Theriault: Off-Season at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery (Charlottetown, PE) from September 14, 2019 - January 5, 2020. The hand drawn imagery reflects on the practices associated with resource extraction, a topic that is alive and well in Canada, drawing from a combination of the artist’s own limited knowledge of these sites and playful or unexpected qualities.
